Kristoffer Nystroms Orkester – Overlook Hotel
Posted on December 21, 2011 | No CommentsAs a whole, this may be one of the better albums released this year and a great find for those who enjoy industrial/ambient. KNO’s strength comes from their ability to write interesting, multi-layered tracks that evolve throughout their duration and keep the listening experience fresh as the track/album progresses. -
Wolfskin / Last Industrial Estate – Stonegates of Silence
Posted on September 16, 2011 | No CommentsWhile these tracks are composed predominately of heavy, flowing drones and dense, crushing atmospheres, this is certainly not your run-of-the-mill one-drone-for-ten-minutes type of album. -

Yen Pox – Blood Music
Posted on January 24, 2011 | No CommentsA great retrospective look at a long career within the genre. Stylistically, their sound hasn't changed much - brooding drones with incidental stabs of unexpected nihilism, sparsely populated with unexpected, chilling textures, and steering well clear of such archaic conventions as rhythm, melody or time signatures. -
Phaenon – His Master’s Voice
Posted on December 6, 2010 | 2 CommentsSadly, "His Master's Voice" doesn't quite bring anything new to the table in terms of genre advancement. It's just more of the same ambient that 50 other producers are generating. So there's no denying that it's clever stuff, but that's about its greatest drawcard. -
False Mirror – Derelict World
Posted on November 22, 2010 | No Comments"Derelict World" is the newest album from dark ambient artist False Mirror, released via stalwart label Malignant. Firstly, I must ask your forgiveness for me for being a bit long winded here, but there is much to say about this release. The major thing I want to emphasize is that it is truly an album, a coherent and calculated whole. -
Phelios – Astral Unity
Posted on May 23, 2010 | No CommentsCD, Malignant Records, 2010 www.phelios.de A title like “Astral Unity” gives worrying images of hippies enjoying psychedelic experiences, but luckily this is German dark ambient artist, Phelios, with his fourth full length album and there is no departure into lighter […] -
Collapsar – Beyond the Event Horizon
Posted on May 2, 2010 | No CommentsCD, Malignant Records, 2010 www.malignantrecords.com Opening with “An Introduction to Black Holes” it’s immediately evident that we are in for something bleak and oppressive or positively crushing; there really are no surprises here as this does exactly what it states […] -
Hyios – Consuetudines
Posted on August 5, 2009 | No CommentsCD, Malignant Records, 2009 www.myspace.com/hyiosinfo Once again, here rises a promising newcomer in the dark ambient/drone scene. With “Consuetudines”, his debut album recently released on the US label Malignant Records, this artist from Leipzig, Germany, proves that Hyios is a […] -
Terra Sancta – Disintegration
Posted on May 31, 2009 | No CommentsCD, Malignant Records, 2008 www.terra-sancta.com While I am an outspoken fan of accomplished artists within the dark ambient realm, “Disintegration” clumsily stumbles on its intended target, creating fifty-seven minutes of glorified white noise, which fails to build to a crescendo. […]
